The Objectives and Key Results Framework is built around two simple ideas. Specifically, an Objective answers what you want to achieve, while Key Results answer how you will know you are getting there. From Strategy to Weekly Traction

An Objective is qualitative, ambitious and inspiring. Each Objective then carries three to five Key Results, which are quantitative and time-bound. What is an OKR?

An OKR is made up of one Objective (what you want to achieve) and three to five Key Results (how you will measure progress toward it). Together, they connect ambitious goals to measurable, time-bound outcomes. Consequently, every team has both a clear direction and a way to know whether it is succeeding.

What is the difference between OKRs and KPIs?

A KPI is a single indicator of performance, often used to maintain steady-state business. An OKR groups an objective with three to five key results, and is typically used to drive change or stretch performance. In short, KPIs run the business, while OKRs change the business. Importantly, a struggling KPI often becomes the key result inside a new OKR.

What is the difference between OKRs and the Balanced Scorecard?

The Balanced Scorecard is cascaded down annually, while OKRs are set quarterly and aligned rather than cascaded. The BSC encourages 100 per cent achievement, whereas OKRs encourage stretch goals where 70 to 75 per cent achievement is considered healthy. As a result, the BSC suits operational consistency, while OKRs are designed for ambition, ownership and faster learning.

What are some common OKR myths?

Common myths include treating OKRs as a renamed MBO, linking them to bonuses, cascading them top-down, and mistaking them for KPIs or the Balanced Scorecard. Furthermore, many believe OKRs replace strategy or that good software alone will deliver results. In reality, OKRs are a conduit for implementing strategy and a discipline of practice, not a substitute for either.

The most common pitfalls include linking OKRs to rewards, disconnecting them from strategy, setting too many at once, cascading instead of aligning, and ignoring change management.
